DESCRIPTION COLORATION

Coloration = redish-browns with reticulated patterning of yellow, cream, off-white, and black along it's back. On it's sides are triangular or diamond-like shapes which can contain brown, black, off-white, blue-ish purple irredescent colors. It's head is large. The head is a light brown with a thin black stripe running through the middle of the top of the head. There are also thin black stripes behind it's eyes to the corners of it's mouth.

 

SIZE

Max = 35 feet
Ave = 19.5 feet

This species is the longest snake. It is not, however, as robust as the Anaconda.

 

HOME

Tropical Southeast Asia from Thailand to the Philippines.

 

HABITAT

Rainforest, near water.

 

LIFESTYLE

This snake is mainly nocturnal. Mainyly terrestrial although it is a strong climber and strong swimmer. This animal is often seen in water. Pyhton reticulatus has been known to eat domestic animals from rainforest villages. This animal is also often found in rat-infested villages.

 

FOOD

Mammals, birds, rats, poultry, dogs, cats.

 

BREEDING

Clutches consist of up to 100 eggs. In captivity, females may not brood their clutch making artifiical incubation nesseccarry.

 

IN CAPTIVITY

 

Python reticulatus is known to bite. Large snakes should be handled by more than one more. This species should only be kept by experienced herpetologists. These snakes easily adapt to proper captive conditions.
Vivarium for one adult snake = at least 6.5 feet x 1.5 feet x 1.5 feet.
Vivarium furnishings: Strong branches or similar apparatus for climbing; Water container large enough for snake to submerge it's entire body. Hide area.
Temperature: Day = approx. 82 degrees F. Night = approx. 73 degrees F.
Humidity: High - mimicking rainforest conditions if possible.
Food: mice, rats, chickens, rabbits, pigeons.

 

INTERESTING FACTS
  • One Reticulated Pyhton was known to survive for 2.5 years without eating.
  • There are stories of Python reticulatus feeding on humans, but the authenticity of the stories is debatable. This snake, however, is large enough to feed on humans.
